This enigmatic piece is from the relatively little region of Gimbala or Marrah mountains in Western Sudan. This area is the heartland for the Fur ethnic group. Believed to be cast between 1700 and 1900 the piece may have been a product of the influence of the Kanem-Bornu Empire (1380s–1893) - an active state of what is now northeastern Nigeria which ultimately who invaded the region in the middle ages introducing Islam. The empire ultimately incorporated areas that are today parts of Chad, Niger, Sudan, and Cameroon; - Research by JL
