The Nayarit region of Mexico created some of the most beautiful ancient works of art found in Mesoamerica. Aside from powerful clay figures and mysterious "Chinesco-styled" art, this culture has also developed stunningly beautiful pottery, as evident from this gorgeous bowl from the neighboring state of Zacatecas. Chevrons and geometric spear shapes intersect one another and create a pattern divided into four sections. Perhaps each section is symbolic of the four seasons or the four stages of life—birth, adolescence, adulthood and old age. The deep brown design shows up clearly against the bowls creamy white surface. Whether this piece was meant for everyday use or for special ceremonies, it is indeed a mesmerizing artifact.
