This beautiful bronze protome of a lion dates to the Roman period and was found in the hills surrounding Hebron. The lion is traditionally regarded as the symbol of the Israelite tribe of Judah. According to the Torah, the tribe consists of the descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. The lion of Judah was (and still is) one of the most prominent symbols in Jewish material culture.
This protome presents a young lion, with the mouth fiercely open in a mighty roar. This artefact was realised with exceptional care. The mane in particular is rendered with outstanding attention to detail as are the whiskers. This protome was realised with the lost wax technique, typical of the casting of bronze sculptures in the classical world.
This is an outstanding piece of Classical art, befitting the most discerning collectors.
