Armadillos are found throughout Costa Rica today. They were popular in Pre-Columbian mythology and modern tales. The voluptuous shape of the armadillo has inspired the artist to create a wide, deep vessel out of its body. The concept of the idea and the execution of this fine work of art reveal to us that a sophisticated artist created it. On the four legs, the armadillo’s scales were incised into the vessel's surface before it completely dried. The artist's manipulation of the clay here creates a complementary texture to the curvilinear smoothness of the upper body. Scales were incised on the head and long nose, as well. The subtle swelling of the armadillo's cheekbones and nose further reveal the artist's sensitivity and control of the medium of clay. All aspects of this vessel lead us to wonder and marvel over the fantastic artistry displayed in this remarkable work of art. HT. 25.5cm(10IN) : L. 36.8cm(14 1/2IN)
