The taking of trophy heads in battle seems to have been an important ritual activity for the Ancient Costa Ricans; one that was thought to be necessary to maintain the cycle of agricultural fertility. Such conquests were designed to please the gods and so men attempted to make sacrifices to them either of great size or of great value. This carved head is relatively large and is adorned with an elaborately patterned cap, showing the importance of this particular offering, and indicating the giver's great desire for the god's benevolence.
