This exquisitely sculpted and etched head done in a black slip shows the skill of a true craftsman. The opening of the vessel is incorporated into the top of the vessel while the facial features are carefully molded. The face itself is both etched and sculpted. The decoration of the face is etched with geometric patterns both on the cheeks and forehead. The eyes are almond shaped with distinct eyebrows above them. The nose is aquiline with slightly flared nostrils. The lips are slightly parted yet reveal no teeth. The ears are merely suggested with small lobes that are pierced. It is clear that the artist took great care in creating this work of art and creating the realism that is so evident to us. With pieces such as this, we realize just how beautiful art can be.
