On first seeing this vessel it appears it once contained something very precious to require the jaguar effigy. They would have used this particular animal for protection of the vessel's contents. This large vessel begins from the sturdy base it rests upon. The base is very unique in its wide slanting shape that looks like an upside down bowl. The base is complimented by beautiful tribal patterns. The most unique aspect of the base is the twisted rope design that separates the body of the vessel with the base. One of the most precious of all the features of this vessel is the jaguar body that is superimposed to the side of the vessel. The artist was able to capture the wild beast at a moment in time. The jaguar appears to be leaping off the vase. The frontal view allows on to see the four legs and paws of the jaguar. Spots and black lines highlighting the separation of the legs from the body cover the jaguar’s body. The tail is raised and partially wraps around the side of the vessel. The facial features of the jaguar are the most spectacular. He is exposing his fangs that are enhanced by the red paint that outlines the mouth. The eyes are wide open and fiercely staring down any attacker who might approach. The jaguar has an unusual marking starting from the tip of his nose to the base of his neck. The other most distinguishing feature of this vessel is the bands of different tribal patterns. The most prominent band is depicting a scene most probably an attack between a jaguar and other animals found in the jungle. Collectively, this piece resonates power and strength that are the basic tenants to the Ancient Costa Ricans moral foundation.
