The scenes of merriment and sensuality that adorn this rare vessel show the Roman's appreciation for the pleasures of this life. The subject matter most likely links the vessel to the worship of the wine god Dionysos; and perhaps to the marriage ritual, where such scenes could serve an instructional purpose. What we see here is life approached clear-eyed and unblushing, a celebration of its joys that are free from value judgements.
