Mace heads, simulating the weapons of war, were carried in Ancient Costa Rica as symbols of power and rank. Sometimes they represented clans, warrior groups or tribes, while on other occasions they identified individuals in positions of power. This superbly carved example of green stone depicts some type of an avian. Such birds were revered in Ancient America for their grace and strength and were thought to have magical energy. The graceful form and the detailed rendering of this mace head can be appreciated by all cultures throughout time.
