The two birds on opposite side of the vessel become playful through the use of line and color. The vibrant tones of red, orange, creme, brown, and black are reflected within this creature. The artist has chosen to depict this particular bird, because the Costa Ricans lived with these animals in a jungle-like environment. Within the elaborate decorations, the form of a crocodile appears to us in the second and fourth layers. The artist has chosen to depict creatures of this climate without realism to show the symbolism behind them. The crocodile was an animal both admired and dreaded for its power and energy. The geometrical patterning combines the symbolism and mysticism of these two animals in the intertwining of carved areas. The Guanacaste Nicoya region is powerfully represented within this vessel through vibrant color, and powerful energy.
