The stance of this figure is firm, yet very human. His facial expression is one of sobriety and dignity, perhaps intended to convey to an ancient viewer a sense of respect and awe for the sacredness of the place in which it stood. The large size of this figure removes it from the decorative realm, and makes it also serve as an element of architectural space, its angular lines reproducing those found in the surrounding structures. The position of the arms, one clutching its chest and the other foreshortened as if reaching towards the viewer, draws one's thoughts beyond the immediate physical elements of the statue, and into the deeper significance expressed by its face.
