Some ancient cultures, like the Egyptians and the Greeks, sought in their art to render the human body with an idealized perfection. The people of ancient America generally favored a more abstract mode for the body, concentrating on moods and attitudes rather than anatomical accuracy. This lively and charming work, created by the Kaci culture of Central Ecuador, radiates an energy that is absolutely human. It shows a cheerful individual in middle age, replete with a slight paunch. He is nude, free from all symbols of rank or status, a man in his most basic form. In his presence, we become aware of the essential qualities that bind all people past and present in all parts of the world.
