The female form has been expressed in many ways throughout man's history. Here we see her created out of the hands of an Ancient Nayarit potter. Sculpted with full hips and arms positioned around a large stomach, this female figure brings our immediate attention to her unique, womanly qualities. Her distinctive facial features are characteristic of the Nayarit "Chinesco" style, represented by high cheekbones, and delicately slanted, almond-shaped eyes which, when combined, convey to the viewer a subtle oriental feeling. A large nose clip, also typical of Nayarit figures, adds an element of intrigue to this ancient female, as we imagine how her real-life counterpart must have appeared so many centuries ago. Clearly, the people of this west coast region of Mexico were masters at capturing both the essence and nuances of their culture through this highly responsive medium, one that forms the very earth beneath their feet.
