The Mayan culture, over the years has created some of the most beautiful pieces of art ever found, and this vessel is no exception. Created out of beautiful red earthenware, the vessel is decorated through a series of panels. At the top register, the design has been separated into panels, creating individual works of art, each with its own distinct characteristics. The main body of the vessel however, is extremely descriptive. Of primary importance, it shows men of a high echelon in the community preparing food that is to be given to the Gods during the ceremony that they are preparing for. Their dress is also appropriate for a ceremony of great importance. Another man, also dressed in elaborate robes, carries a staff, possibly to use during the ceremony. The staff might also allude to the person's role not only in the ceremony but also within the community. The snake that appears close to him, is an important factor in Mayan culture and is often represented in their work. In all, this piece exemplifies the true craftsmanship of the Mayan culture both with its design and it’s story telling.
