Standing tall, holding a long staff, this man appears to command dignity from all those who look upon him. He wears a pleated robe that appears perfectly conical from the front while the contours of his body are evident in the back. A necklace with a triangular pendant rests in the space between the upper edge of his robe and the sash draped over his shoulder. The staff, the necklace, and the two bracelets she wears on her wrists all suggest his high-ranking status within Yoruba society. His closely cropped coiffure appears almost like a helmet, although a series of dots has been incised to suggest the texture of his hair. Who does this man represent? Perhaps he is a king or part of the royal entourage. Perhaps he is a deceased ancestor whom relatives continue to worship in the guise of this brass effigy. He is surely someone who deserves to be honored, just the staff alone commands respect. Clearly, this is a man of elite status who has been memorialized in this gorgeous sculpture.
