Mounted in a stunning gold ring.

The art of glyptics, carving on colored semiprecious stones, is probably one of the oldest art forms known to man. Intaglios, gems with an incised design, were made as early as the fourth and third millennia B.C. In Mesopotamia and the Aegean. However, it was in ancient Greece and Rome that the expressive and aesthetic language of glyptics was truly born, with artists borrowing themes from epic poetry and legends of gods and heroes. In this stunning example, created during the later classical revival period, we see the ancient beauty and exceptional artistry displayed in a carnelian intaglio depicting the ancient deity Helios. This actively mobile god, roused daily by the crowing of the cock, drives the sun across the heavens with his four-horse chariot. At night he sails home along the ocean stream which flows around the world, embarking his chariot and team on a golden ferry-boat. The stunning image of Helios rendered on this masterfully carved intaglio depicts the god seated, wearing a radiant crown and balancing a beautiful bird on his outstretched hand, yet another traveler through the ancient azure skies. The wearer of this stunning intaglio ring, artistically engraved with the image of Helios, will most certainly radiate a dynamic presence, not unlike that of the ancient god himself.
