This intaglio is set is an 18 karat gold ring.
Facing left is the image of a young man who bears some resemblance to the emperor Nero (54- 68 A.D.). His wavy hair is beautifully depicted with a laurel wreath encircling the head, which creates a fringe of hair over the forehead. The best known Roman emperors were popular subjects for engravers during the Classical Revival, who made extensive studies of ancient coinage to achieve a realistic likeness. Mounted in its gold ring this intaglio would have graced the finger even of a great ruler of Rome.
