On the multi-colored ground of this beautiful vessel are two identical birds done in relief form on a textured background. Treating both birds as one, it is possible to say it appears to be a cormorant. Given the "floppy" long neck and oversized legs it is probably a baby. With considerable skill the artist has compressed considerable detail into a small space, with the effect of making each bird appear very large. The cormorant is noted for its voracious appetite, and it is amusing to conjecture what items might have been placed in this bowl. The eyes of both are marvelously expressive, with that slightly dazed and very sweet look birds have when newly born. It is at rest, as if having failed an attempt to fly. But its wings are lifted, its head rising to try again and soar through the clouds.
