This jaguar head is marvelously rich with energy and highly complex mythology. It is carved out of jade, a rare and beautiful stone that is much harder than obsidian. It is splendidly carved with rich symbolism. In this very symmetrical work of art, the artist has created a miniature masterpiece. The jaguar seems to come alive through the deep eye sockets, and the slight curve of the mouth. Every detail of this sculpture had been carved and polished with a tremendous amount of sensitivity. The jaguar lived amongst the Mayan people and although they worshipped it, they feared it at the same time. As we focus on the art of ancient times, we marvel at our ability to understand these cultures through their art. This piece is a beautiful example of how the artist has preserved the sentiments of the time.
