This Intaglio is Set in an 18 Karat Gold Rin
Ancient glyptics are most remarkable for their precise outline, perfection of composition and splendid quality of the stones. The subject matter for the engraving often centers around mythical figures and scenes familiar to the educated through the works of Homer and Virgil. In the later empire the intaglios occasionally reflect the syncretic nature of pagan religions, bringing together a variety of images which have since lost their meaning. However, in an example such as this delightful intaglio ring, the mystery of the figure only heightens its appeal, and allows our imaginations to gallop. The image appears to be a horse rearing back on its hind legs. What may be a rider could in fact be wings, suggesting Pegasus, the immortal winged horse who carried the thunder and lightening of Zeus. This miraculous animal was said to have created many springs from the earth by stamping his hoofs on the ground, which he may be doing in this case. To wear this ring brings alive mysterious and magical traditions of the past, held in the beautiful luster of this lovely gem.
