One of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, Rhodes enjoyed great prosperity during the period these coins were minted. The island was perfectly situated for trade coming from the East on route to the eastern Mediterranean. Five ideal harbors turned Rhodes into a vibrant commercial center, and consequently of some political interest. In 305 B.C. Demetrius I Poliorcetes ('Besieger of Cities'), laid siege to the island to his misfortune. After a heroic year-long defense by the Rhodians Demetrius was forced to negotiate. The proceeds from the sale of his siege equipment enabled Rhodes to build the famous Colossus, a statue of their patron god Helios, and one of the seven wonders of the world. This radiant god is seen on these two lovely coins. He is shown as a young man of great beauty with flowing locks of hair. On the reverse is a rose bud with very delicately engraved petals. These coins are a reminder of a glorious age, shining as brilliantly today as they did thousands of years ago.
