The Romans perfected the art of glassmaking, and objects made from this lovely substance were greatly prized throughout antiquity. In this unusual pendant, an ancient jewel and a roman household artifact are combined to stunning effect. Since the dawn of time, the spindle whorl was commonly used as a counter weight for the spinning and weaving of wool. Roman custom dictated that noble women and commoner alike engaged in this everyday chore: it was considered a mark of virtue. Whose slender fingers might have held this glass whorl when it was new? What thoughts and daydreams helped her pass the time as she went about her task? The bead that complements the whorl may once have graced the neck of a great beauty. In this most unusual jewel, it is once again destined to adorn a remarkable individual.
