This jaguar effigy jar is a classic example of Nicoya Polychrome. The detailed realistic modeling of the feline head is combined with a human like pose of arms resting on legs. The hollow front legs contain balls of clay which make them into rattles. Jaguar motifs cover the legs, arms, chest, tail and the first band of decoration under the lip. The jaguar motif most represents a sun-devouring mesoamerican god.
