In the painting “Pope” we observe the figure of an old pope, his wizened face and somber eyes testifying to the inevitable tolls of time. His aged image appears trapped within the confines of the swirling light and shadow that envelops his physical being as well as his soul. A sense of humble resignation passes over him, for both the real and imagined battles of the faith may now be somehow too overwhelming to combat. We feel a sense of compassion for this vintage figure, as he reveals to us a weariness and vulnerability that can touch us one and all, saint and sinner alike.
