The Gallinazo culture was artistically influenced both by the early Mochica, and by the art of Peru’s South Coast. This lively vessel, originally intended as a tomb offering, depicts a couple engaged in sexual activity. Though unquestionably erotic, we would never think to call it pornographic; rather, it celebrates life and the sensuous pleasures of the world so enjoyed by the peoples of Ancient America. Centuries ago, when it was created, it served as an affirmation of life's goodness; today, it still does.
