When we first see a Mezcala figure like this we think "Ah! portraiture stripped to its barest essence. So pure. So simple." It isn't simple of course--the grooves in the hard stone are deep, the result of considerable work. It must have taken a great deal of forethought to find the character hidden in the stone and draw it out just so.
