Though overt sexuality is not common in Mayan Art, the motif of an older man embracing a younger woman appears frequently. Similar images of May-December romance are used in European art for comic effect, but the Mayan motif appears to have a deeper spiritual significance. It perhaps evokes the conjunction of opposites, which is essential to the continuity of life: young and old, male and female. Here a vigorous, scowling older man embraces a buxom young lady, who welcomes his attentions.
