Though on one level, this sculpture represents a woman in mourning, at the same time it evokes the promise of rebirth and fertile life to come. This duality in the cycle of existence is an ever-present theme in the art of Ancient Mexico. The expression on this figure's face suggests sorrow, but her voluptuous body calls to mind the pleasures of the senses, the ongoing joy of life. We realize that these themes are as relevant to our age as they were in that vanished one.
