The ceramic traditions in Ecuador are some of the oldest in the new world, revealing surprisingly innovative and creative cultures. This powerful mother goddess figure from the Valdivian culture exemplifies the Ecuadorians remarkable creative efforts, for this goddess expresses a host of universal sensibilities that can be felt and understood by all who experience her. She stands in a familiar position with demure hands covering her femininity, a stance reminiscent of the old world goddess Aphrodite, the symbolic hand gestures serving to heighten rather than diminish our awareness of her womanliness. The creator and protector of life, this expressive mother goddess reawakens an ancient memory, a primal spirit, a sense of connectedness and belonging. In her we can hear life’s never-ending song of birthing, living and dying. She is the great mother, source of perpetual renewal and great joy.
