This figural whistle embodies the creative spirit of the Ancient Mayan potters, gifted ceramicists whose legacy springs from the very earth itself. Deftly molded from clay, the whistle appears as a seated figure with arms resting comfortably atop crossed legs. Remnants of the original brightly colored paint can be seen on the figure's distinctive face and parts of his body. As we turn the delightful image around we are surprised to find that clinging to the figure's back is a stylized monkey, the animal's mouth imaginatively forming the mouthpiece of the whistle. As we partake in the surprising delights of this whistle, we realize that its Ancient Mayan communicative powers are everlasting, the melodic notes that spring forth from its being echoing the mysteries of the past.
