This Chinesco style figure is made with burnished, fired clay. The surface of the figure is elegantly finished; with rich reddish-orange base color the figure shows naive features such as the flat head, simple slit-eyes, and a small slit-mouth. It also has only a simple indication of the limbs. However, it is this innocent nature that adds charm to the figure and draws the viewer's attention, stirring interest in this peculiar figure. The body surface is enhanced with a painted loincloth and a headdress, in addition to the sculptural indications of a neckpiece and armbands. Found from a shaft tomb, this clay figure holds a special ceremonial significance. Perhaps the figure was a symbolic, ritual offering in the late pre-classical ceremony in Nayarit. It is amazing to realize that a small figure can speak so much of the past, the ancient culture of Mesoamerica.
