Somber and dignified, this sculpture depicts a powerful ruler in his community. There is intense energy radiating from the dynamic facial expression and clearly delineated physical features. His strong features are set with the dignity of his rank and responsibility. This man is considered royalty, because he does not have clothes on. The hint of a garment is suggested by the cloak-like design around his shoulders, another suggestion of his status. Multiple ear ornaments adorn his youthful face and bracelets lay high on his slender arms. He is wearing what looks like a headdress, and has ear spools through his ears. This headdress is indicative of a shaman, as it connected this person to the higher spirits. The dark paint around his eyes accentuates his face to show his ritual importance. His wide, staring eyes are full of wonder and awareness of the rituals that took place before him. We share wonder and awareness, as well, towards this beautiful work of art, which has graced our modern presence with the Ancient achievements of the past.
