This so-called "frying-pan" form was used for burning incense, mainly on ceremonial occasions. The perfectly formed round "pan" would have been used to hold the burning incense. The extended handle is a hollow form with slits, and contains rattles. Seated at the end of the handle is an appliquéd figure. The bowl of the censer is painted with a burnished red slip, while the handle is left matte, possibly so it may be gripped more easily. In this censer there is an aura of mysticism, as we are left to imagine the ceremonies that it has witnessed. L. 28cm(11IN)
