Many works of art done during ancient times had a subtle similarity to their character and design. However, we sometimes come across a work so unique, that it stands out in our minds. This woman who is kneeling before us is one such piece. Here we see one artist's true creativity. The rotund body of the woman creates the idea of pregnancy, which is emphasized by her pained expression as if in the midst of a contraction. The polychrome earthenware with subtle hues, such as brown, red and orange, connect the woman directly with the earth. The anatomy is done with child-like simplicity, yet the decoration is entirely that of a true artist. Her belly seems distended which heightens the idea of pregnancy as does her slightly hunched back, the effects of the extra weight. Her face is beautifully decorated with geometric patterns and her forehead shows signs of scarification. Her aquiline nose and simple headpiece round off a work of art. Though a work of great beauty, we are still able to feel her discomfort and thus relive part of the past through her.
