In the more recent past, the depiction of people was done with flattery and even exaggeration, the result being that the person, in all ways looked perfect. In more primitive tribal settings however, realism was a key to being a true artist. This vessel shows that the artist felt that this realism was very important. The medical term for this ailment is pectus carinatum, which means pigeon breast. The chest actually comes out at an angle, probably making life exceedingly difficult. The vessel itself was a type of pouring vessel due to its spout at the back and two separate openings in which to pour the liquid. To maintain a balance, the artist has kept the decoration to a minimum, using neutral earthen tones and geometric decoration. The band work around the eyes is typical of the style of this time. His kneeling position may suggest that he was in a state of worship, possibly to ask for assistance in his ailment. Nevertheless, it is the realism that was created, that allows this piece to remain in our minds, and to concentrate on the creativity.
