This beautiful terracotta female shows both the radiance and the pain involved in bearing a child. She seems to be in the early stages of pregnancy, yet what is most striking is the extensive body decoration and painting that extends all over her body. She also wears extremely simple jewelry around her neck and forehead. The body decoration itself is done in geometric form in a combination of colors, which brings out the expressive and realistic face that the artist has created. The eyebrows protrude gently, while under the eye is a hint of puffiness. The nose also flairs slightly at the nostrils, while the head is tilted upwards as if looking at the sky or perhaps something beyond that. Whatever her thoughts might have been, we have the ability to commiserate with her and sympathize though she cannot speak to us and realize that we are looking at a piece that has traveled through many years and has survived many hardships and has many tales to tell.
