From the depths of the great Atlantic-Watershed Zone of the culturally rich country of Costa Rica, history and art combine to tell us a story. This artistic vessel may express one or many of the ancient stories or mythologies relating to the monkey. There are applied monkey bodies on the rattle tripods. The monkeys have bulging eyes that slant upward and protruding noses. The mouths are open as if they are screeching. A rather sensitive rendering of a creature that often does just that. The monkey heads are adorned with peculiar hats. The hats have three tiers of spiraling clay. The elbows are set backward with hands resting at the sides. Firing slits are cut into the front of each figure. The globular lower body of this vessel constricts to a sloping shoulder before the neck splays as it rises to the slightly flared mouth. Applied circular pellets have been added at the shoulder. The artist in following the swelling contours of this globular vessel has paid careful attention. This vessel may have served an important function during shaman rituals. The artistic ingenuity and beautiful shape of this vessel makes it a masterpiece of well-developed skill and remarkable creativity.
