From the depths of the great Atlantic-Watershed Zone of the culturally rich country of Costa Rica, history and art combine to tell us a story. This artistic bowl may express one or many of the ancient stories or mythologies relating to these zoomorphic creatures. There are applied zoomorphic creatures on each rattle leg. They appear to be clinging to a round object. The long tail curls to the left. The bodies have jaguar characteristics, but the necks are extremely long. There is a peculiar expression on each creature. The ears stand straight out while wide-open eyes stare forward. A dot design covers the body. It is the same technique, which covers the bowl in linear patterns. The three hollow rattle legs support the round-bottomed cup-shaped bowl. Its tall neck is stepped back slightly from a small curved shoulder and splays out as it rises to form the gently curving averted mouth rim. The artist in following the swelling contours of this globular bowl has paid careful attention. This bowl may have served an important function during shaman rituals. The artistic ingenuity and beautiful shape of this bowl makes it a masterpiece of well-developed skill and remarkable creativity.
