With irrepressible charm this frog looks at us with his big black eyes, as curious about us as we are about him. Frog motifs are common in Costa Rican gold jewelry and less so in ceramics. Costa Rica abounds in a vast variety of beautifully colored tree and ground frogs greatly admired by the ancient people as they are today. This particular species has large black spots covering his entire body and bright red lips, more a result of the artist's whimsy than zoological accuracy. In fact, the feet are more like those of a jaguar, which contribute to this frog's unique character. There is such life and joy in this vessel that it transcends time and is as attractive today as it was when made hundreds of years ago in the fertile lands of the Guanacaste-Nicoya region.
