Designed to resemble the face and head of a human being, this vessel shows the importance of imagery, when an object is used for an important function. Many of such vessels, would have been used in ceremonial practices and rituals, and therefore they must show great skill and beauty. Most striking in this piece is the great detail on the etching around the face and the high relief molding of the basic features, such as the eyes, the eyebrows and most of all, the mouth. The burnished red earthenware adds warmth to the piece and creates a very beautiful presence within the piece and thus played a large part in the ceremonial procession.
