Central American art is known for its use of many different kinds of subject matter. This particular vessel is designed in the shape of a wild pig that would have been common in the region at that time. The opening of the vessel is at the top of the animal's head and is placed at a slight angle. The body is cylindrical in shape and the feet are slightly raised so that the animal's paws do not actually touch the surface. The decoration and appliqué work is equally interesting. The earthenware has been painted in a warm russet color with black painted geometric designs on the body and along the forehead of the animal. The function of this vessel was most likely presentational at large ceremonies, and would have had a special significance to the activities. This type of function creates an air of intrigue for us today as we consider what the world was like then, and question with fascination the reasons behind their art.
