The figure-celt was greatly revered in Upper Central America. The cult image was probably derived from Olmec anthropomorphic celts that were associated with earth, rain and thunderbolt. The celt was also a symbol of the rain and fire gods in other parts, such as Mexico. The deep color of the jade or jadeite is particularly striking, emphasizing the angular carvings of design on the hard, green stone.
