This piece came out of an era when the family was a crucial part of life and maintaining the patrimonial bloodline was of utmost importance. To promote this awareness and importance, many artists represented it in the work they created. It makes one wonder if this was used as a food server for aphrodisiacs. This piece is extraordinary in many aspects. It has highly realistic facial features that portray a man who is content and at ease with life. His arms are slightly raised from the side of the tray and the hand is turned down and the palms of the hands are opened. The sides of the tray are carved in traditional tribal etchings. This creates fluidity about the piece and its balance with the surrounding environment.
