The flora and fauna that the Costa Ricans were surrounded by became the subject matter for much of their art. This artist depicted one of the most common animals with true to life rendering. It is an adorable example that expresses to us the humor and culture of these people. This vessel stands on three legs all designed in the same pattern of three red lines. The vase is depicting the body of the armadillo. The head is three-dimensional and sticks out from the vessel. The head is under a hood that is the protective body armor of the armadillo. The rendering of the face is very realistic and the expression is one of awe. The armadillo's paws are clasping the side of the face and a scared expression is in his eyes. Perhaps he knew the end was near. There is a wonderful motif at the top of the vessel depicting other wild animals in the jungle: snakes, wolves and even a human. The back of the vessel even has a tail that is also protruding from the vessel.
