For centuries artists have turned to nature for inspiration, especially in a culture where animals such as the jaguar were highly revered. They symbolized strength and prowess in both the physical and non- physical worlds. This figure is a beautiful example of a stone carver's art. Its contours are elegant and refined, making rich use of the splendid color of the stone. The face is quite abstract using a few simple lines, yet very expressive. The artist seems to have delighted in his creation. There is warmth exuding from the material; the natural mineral veins of red, magenta and white glisten in the light, imitating the sleek coat of a jaguar. This superb sculpture will certainly occupy a proud place anywhere. HT. 19cm(7 1/2IN): L. 33cm(13IN)
