Set against a lovely blue enameled background are important scenes from the life of Jesus. The upper portion of the left panel depicts the crucifixion, with the crucified Christ occupying a central area. Two angels swoop from the heavens carrying robes or vestments, while God the Father watches from above. Jerusalem is shown in the style of a medieval Russian city, the sepulchral ground of Golgotha is cleverly represented in an abstract manner having thin, wavy bands to imitate bare rolling hills. Four square panels clockwise show the Annunciation, (appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary), the birth of Jesus, Jesus brought to the temple, and the Holy Family. On the upper portion of the right panel Christ is elevated to the Heavens. The Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Ghost (represented as a dove), are contained within a type of wreath surrounded by angels. We see on the four panels below the baptism of the infant Jesus, His baptism by St. John, Christ's entrance into Jerusalem, and his Glorification as the Son of God. Through an engraver's superb skill we are able to experience the birth, worldly travels and travails, the passion, death and transfiguration of Christ-- all created with skill and an obvious love for the subject.
