This icon, part of a larger work, was made for the "Feast Days and the Exaltation of the Mother of God." The upper panel depicts the Crucifixion, with Mary Magdalen and an attendant at left, and the Virgin Mary with a Roman soldier at right. God the Father watches from above, with the skull of Adam seen at the base of the cross within the folds of the Golgotha hills. Below, beginning upper left running clockwise is the Annunciation, the Nativity, Jesus' presentation at the temple, and scenes from life of the Holy Family. Each of the panels is so richly detailed they comprise a vivid and graphic depiction, complete with very ornate and detailed architectural backgrounds. Touches of paint add a nice contrast to the relief figures, which are so expressive they seem to be in motion.
