This extraordinary pendant is a stunning example of the unique and striking creativity that was expressed by the Pre-Columbian artists through the medium of gold. As its name implies, Costa Rica has been famous for its gold since the moment of European discovery. The ecstatic reports by Columbus and successive 16th century conquistadors were due, no doubt, to the witnessing of such splendid works of art as this gold avian pendent. With two heads and an exaggerated emphasis on wings and tail, this bird figure clearly contains supernatural, nonrealistic features. However, this distinctive winged pose can be observed in nature today, when, after a rain, certain soaring birds spread their wings to dry in the sun while they sit perched in a tree. Although the original symbolism inherent in this bird pendant remains rather elusive and unclear, we can appreciate its radiant beauty and fine craftsmanship just as the early conquistadors did so many centuries ago. Perhaps if we listen closely we may even hear the rapid flutter of wings as our imagination experiences this ancient golden bird of the tropical rain forest.
