Painted in an opulent Classical style, this superb icon depicts an Orthodox bishop holding a baby and kneeling before the benevolent image of the Madonna and Child. The sculpted excedra in which the picture hangs, the pillars, and three similar icons in the background all suggest the interior of a church. The bishop appeals to the Virgin for guidance concerning the orphan child he has found. The narrative quality of the scene indicates it originally was part of a series on the life of the Saint. The visual resonance of Icon within icon, the radiant gold, the rich colors, are the creations of a master artist possessed of both talent and faith.Painted in an opulent Classical style, this superb icon depicts an Orthodox bishop holding a baby and kneeling before the benevolent image of the Madonna and Child.
