This basalt warrior figure stands proudly, holding a weapon-like object in one hand and a trophy head in the other. Although the figure is sculpted in a minimal manner, it is clear that the warrior is proud and strong. The large, definite incision lines define the contour line of his robust body and his muscle structure. Moreover, his highly stylized face emphasizes his strength and determination of a strong warrior, a honored and prestigious position in Ancient Costa Rica. The beautifully incised belt and the flat, cap-like headdress decorating the warrior signify his social status and rank; he is decorated, as a respected warrior should be. In Ancient Costa Rica, warriors took trophy heads of their victims from battles for ritual and ceremonial purposes. Human sacrificial rituals were extremely important since Ancient Costa Ricans believed that one way to please the powerful God was to sacrifice the most perfect human beings. Because of such need for trophy heads, their battles became bloody warfare to obtain sacrificial victims. Having fulfilled his duty, this proud warrior stands stoutly, displaying his prized trophy head.
